Let’s talk about the 120W/cm mercury UV lamp. In the world of industrial curing, this is basically the reliable workhorse. It’s designed to do one thing really well: pump out enough UVC energy to make your adhesives, inks, and coatings snap into place instantly. The heat is real. When you’re packing 120W into every single centimeter, you’re dealing with a lot of concentrated energy. That’s great for high-speed conveyors because it cures everything fast. But there’s a catch. First, double-check your reflectors. If they’re even slightly off, that energy misses the mark, and you’re left with a sticky, uncured mess on your product. Then there’s the temperature. These lamps get hot—really hot. If your cooling blowers aren’t up to the task, you’ll fry the lamp ends way sooner than you should. It’s a simple fix, but one that saves you a lot of money in the long run. The science part (kept simple) We use mercury vapor because it hits that 254nm peak, which is the “sweet spot” for most photoinitiators. To make sure that light actually gets out, we use high-grade quartz for the envelope. We don’t cut corners with cheap glass here. Why? Because cheap glass blocks the UV light and, frankly, it would probably shatter the moment it hit operating temperature. Not a great look for your shop floor. No one likes waiting for parts There is nothing worse than a production line sitting idle because you’re waiting on a custom lamp to ship from halfway across the world.
